Our choice to manage the hospital in Karusi is a very important intervention. The hospital is located in a rural area in the centre of Burundi with thousands of families living in huts, without water or light, and in conditions of extreme poverty. The structure, which was completed a few years ago, is not yet working at full performance. Our intervention has two main objectives, the first being a a monthly contribution so to allow all the poor in the area who cannot yet access heath care, to use the hospital. The Onlus AiutiamoilBurundi will cover the costs of the hospitalizations of the most needy. Another purpose, thanks to the many physicians who have declared their availability to volunteer, is to send Italian professionals to train local staff and carry out specialist activities dedicated to a population exhausted by malaria and poverty.
Burundi is a small landlocked country bordering Rwanda in the north, the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west, and Tanzania in the south and east. Politically, it belongs to East Africa and the African Great Lakes. Recently, in December 2018, the capital was moved from Bujumbura to Gitega.
The main causes of morbidity and mortality in Burundi are malaria, acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
Unfortunately, Burundi still suffers from a very high mortality rate linked to childbirth and pregnancy and the number of infants who do not make it is very high.
